Compression socks I understand.  But compression sleeves etc?  Experiences? Opinions?

High heart rate?

While running hard (but not killing myself), I can get my heart rate to it's theoretical max (178) for my age (43). Once on a hot summers day my monitor showed 181 at the end of a hard run.  But I fe…

"Barefoot" runners out there?

Does anyone have any first hand experiences of running using "barefoot shoes" like Vibram Five Fingers or Feelmax?   I'm curious to try them out but where I live cannot buy these products.

The Turtle!

These originate in Hungary where I live and swim. Locally they are known as the "Turtle". It seems their brandname is StrokeStar: http://www.strokestar.org/en/index.htm swimmer featured in their adve…

Hi Patrick - Can't say I've tried them. Here's a couple of info sources you may find useful: Barefoot running - new evidence, same debate Running barefoot

Yeah, me too - just don't get compression tops/sleeves - can understand more their use in upper body/contact sports like rugby. Do feel the tights have helped with recovery/alleviating soreness. Noticed a number of people wearing the socks during T…

A lot more structured than me :-)

I've always been a "high beater" and can still reach a higher max HRM than the theoretical calcuations would say I can do. Have always used HRM as a judgement of effort and fairly accurate predictor of finish time. In parallel one of my longstanding…

So what did you do, and was it enough? :-)

80miles a week for 5/10km race distances - not surprising they said you were training too much / too slow. More importantly, 1 year on, have you made changes and seen results?

I only recently learnt that "static" stretching before running isn't the best. In retrospect it makes sense!

We use them almost every session, usually in one of the early sets. Because they slow you down I feel they promote good body alignment in the water (and stroke of course). Personally I don't like to push too hard when I'm wearing them - I see it as…

Not seen these before. From their shape, looks like they're designed to smooth the flow of water over the paddle/hand, encouraging you to maximise the surface area of the hand, which is a good thing. Have you tried them Patrick - how do they "feel"?

@king of the mountains. Can you do a tumble turn with the wrist strap removed? It's an interesting tip, but I'm afraid that if I remove the strap I'd never be able to squeeze it into the holes again :-)

Hi Julian, I'm the same age and was never a runner in my younger days. See my comment in http://www.beatyourpb.com/forum/topics/tight-hamstrings. With good stretching my legs never hurt now. It's very boring but I can see the benefits.

Most runners don't stretch near enough and long term it will tell with injuries. Most runners I see do a few stretches for 20 or 30 seconds each. It is not enough. Due to tight leg muscles, my physio gave me a set of stretches. These are hard. Each…
