I'm just getting into running. Something to kill the time I'm not using for anything useful. Right now, I'm training for the Forest City Road Races in London, ON on May 2nd, and hoping to beat my first race.
As the saying goes, if you mostly train at one "light" pace, that's generally the pace you will race at too. I'd definitely suggest putting some more variety into your weekly running programme, including one run that's longer than your race distance - work up so you can comfortably run 7-8k...; also one speed session per week. A session like the one highlighted here would certainly help you.
With regards pacing, if you want to run a 25min 5k, then clearly you need to be running @ 5mins per km. Many watches with GPS will calculate pace as you run which is clearly helpful. Alternatively, you could try some treadmill sessions in a gym, with the machine set at this pace - useful for interval sessions (eg 5mins easy/5mins interval at race pace; repeat 2-4 times)
Lately it's been a bit lax. I've been doing light runs home from work each night (approx 5k), while trying to even it out with yoga and swimming (I dislike weight training). I'm thinking of adding more intense runs on weekday mornings, but find I have difficulties pacing myself.
Nice one Michael - that's still a 10% improvement. Let us know a bit more detail about your weekly training programme and we'll see if we can work out how to make you faster! In the meantime, this may be of interest - 5k run programme.
